Comic # 18 – Thai Spicy

Comic #18 – 14 December 2016

You’d think after four years in Thailand I would have learned my lesson by now…

Thai food can be spicy. You know that. Everyone knows that. I should know that by now too.

But it just smells so good. How can I resist the tropical aroma of garlic, onion, chili, shrimp, lime… It’s too good!

Yeah, I grew up with Tex-Mex, but “Thai Spicy” is something entirely different.

I love Thai food! But I’m not so good when it’s too spicy that it burns my mouth and overpowers the other flavors. One of the very first phrases I learned to say in Thai was “mai phet krap”… not spicy please. It’s really useful for me! I’m a typical “farang”(foreigner), I guess!

Video: Chantaburi, Thailand – Weekend Trip

This weekend we take a trip to Chantaburi, Thailand. Chantaburi is a small town in the east of Thailand, not far from the border with Cambodia.

Chantaburi is famous for its historic cathedral, Old Town, beaches, and national park.

We visit the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Jao Lao Beach, and Nam Tok Plio National Park.

Snacktime: Asia! Ep. 4 – Kit Kats and Golden Sake

Welcome back to Snacktime: Asia!, the show where we finally get to taste something nice for a change!

This week, Michael drags his friend James into it and plays a kit-kat guessing game whilst sipping gold sake! Kanpai!

Note: Ignore the poor video quality, please! This was filmed on an old phone, the only camera I had on hand at the moment.

Snacktime: Asia! Ep.1 – Siam Banana

Introducing Snacktime: Asia!, the show in which I eat a convenience store snack on weeks when I can’t be bothered think of something to do for my weekly video upload!

Nah, but it’s so much more than that! Asia is known for its crazy and inventive snacks, all to be found at the local Family Mart or 7-11.

Siam Banana?? How can this be? Is it a unique Thai snack or a blatant ripoff of a cherished Japanese brand?

Note: This video is from before I knew what takoyaki was! In the video I call them “squid balls”, but in reality, they are made out of octopus.

Snacktime: Asia! features only snacks that can be found at a local convenience store.

Comic #17 – The Night Train

Comic #17 – 7 December 2016

Read our review of the train in Burma (Myanmar) here!

We usually love night trains! We arrived at Yangon Station excited to see what what our first-class compartment would look like, and looking forward to a good night’s sleep after a rough day of traveling.

I will take the night trains up and down Thailand, and find them really comfortable, but was not prepared for a Burmese train. To be fair, the country has only just begun to be opened up to foreign visitors and the infrastructure is still a bit lacking. The trains still run on the 60 year-old rails left by the British Empire, and the ride is BUMPY! All night long, as we tried to sleep on the hard mattresses of our first-class beds, every jolt sent us literally an inch up off the bed.

All I could do was wrap up in my yellow plastic rain poncho (the window was stuck open and it was raining) and try to sleep. And dream of bouncing into Mandalay.

Burma is great though! I just recommend flying or taking the river boat instead!

Watch our Burma travelogue video,

Golden Land

, here! You can see more of the inside of the night train to Mandalay, and join us as we explore the most amazing and inspiring sites in Myanmar.
