Although Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital city, the larger Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is home to some of the country’s best museums. Though most of the museums in the city are dedicated to Vietnam’s independence struggles and the Vietnam War, there are a number of fine art and culture museums as well.

The most interesting attraction in all of Saigon? Take a self-guided tour of Independence Palace (now re-named Reunification Palace), the former residence and seat of power for the South Vietnamese President and a relic of the wild glory days of 1960’s South Vietnam. If you see nothing else in Saigon, you can’t miss a visit to the Independence Palace Museum.
